I swear if I ever have someone call, named Regina, I'm sending her to another Volvo shop! Oh, the emotional scars! Anyhow...
1992 740 Regina car, spits, sputters, stumbles, bogs, happens cold, happens warm...absolutely NO codes. Rule number one...check all your grounds and important terminal connectors to rule out stupid stuff. Everything is absolutely wonderful. On to diagnosis. It feels like power stage, but the plugs are white, so it must be fuel. Okay, that would be suppression relay...replaced it. Did it fix it, NO! Fuel pump relay? Nope. Still in keeping with the white plugs, ran a fuel pressure test, checked fine. Searched for air inlet and vacuum leaks, nope, no leaks, how about a known good map sensor, idle air motor and air temp sensor? Sure! Why not? Nope. Now let's try a control unit...okay now let's try another one...and one last try with my last one...Okay, fine, never mind. The intank sending unit and pump were new 2 years ago, and fuel pressure is fine, so...it feels like spark, it must be spark! Checked the timing to see if it had jumped a tooth (it was fine), put a known, good coil on it, new coil wire, and a new crank sensor, it was original from Volvo with a white band, looked pretty, but hey...it was 12 years old. Fixed, nope. Had just done the cap, rotor, plugs, and wires, I guess it could be a faulty part, did em again, nope! On to the ignition computer(s). Tried three of 'em. Try another coil! Try another crank sensor! ARGH! Speedo shop in south Florida fixed the speedo, the cluster was out...must be that wire behind the cluster...it's touching somewhere and grounding the coil...pulled the cluster, and it was, of course, fine. Tested components BY THE BOOK, all tested in the range of normal, but the coolant temp sensor and tp sensor were a bit off, and the 02 had a whacked out reading. So, let's replace 'em. Finally, I find myself doubting my fuel pressure reading, and replaced the pump, and the pressure regulator. Yesterday found me looking at the telephone pole and considering how hard I would have to hit it to total the car and escape with only my $1000.00 deductible. Today...drove the &%$#*&%^ to another shop, and said, "have at it." Picked it up this afternoon, with a, "don't know Chris, it has us stumped too." I'll phone the priest and request an exorcism, but does anyone, anywhere, have ANY CLUE...or a lighter?
