temp & gas gauge falling 200 1988

I have just switched my 86 240 for an 88 240 and have discovered that both cars have the same problem. The temperature gauge and gas gauge both intermittently fall to the bottom - showing cold engine and empty gas tank. I have checked the fuses and the wiring on the instrument cluster and cannot find a problem.
Any ideas?
