rough idle when sittting still in drive

i have a 90 740 non turbo...only 62k miles...recently it has started surging when ideling in gear..if its in park or N it runs fine..the rpms will move up and down about 600 when sitting still in gear...anyone have a idea of the problem???? i tried adjusting the idle but it does the same thing...
