Hi,
I have a 1992 Volvo 940 GL with 110000 miles and it has stalled twice in the last 10 days.
It started and ran fine and then after driving for 20 minutes for about 10 miles, it stalled while idling at a traffic light. It shuddered and then stopped. I tried to re-start it, and it cranked but would not start. The lights, etc come on so I know it is not the battery, even the power windows work. The same thing happened on both occassions. I dorve for some tmie and then while idling at a traffic light, it stopped and would not re-start, it would just crank.
Both the times, I towed it, first time to a mechanic, the second time to a Volvo dealer. On both occassions, it started normally after some time when the mechanic tried to duplicate the problem.
The volvo dealer said that the timing belt is ok. He said that he did some diagnostics with the fuel pumps and the gauges read fine. He could not duplicate the problem, just like the other mechanic I took it to the first time.
He asked me to bring the car back when the fuel level was a quarter tank.
I am not sure how to fix the car. I have heard that Volvos can go 200000 miles and that is why I bought the car.
I would really appreciate it, if someone can advise me here. Does it make sense to take it to the dealer again, since they charge so much.
Please help
Thank You
Vinayak
