A/C charged but won't run 700 1991

I charged the a/c on the 91 740 this weekend. But the compressor would not start. I ran a hot wire to the compressor and it engaged, ran great and got nice cold air in the car. I tried shorting across the pressure switch on the dryer but it did not start the compressor. Fuses are good. As a last resort I'll run a fused power source to the compressor clutch with a switch on the dashboard but I prefer to keep it "stock". Any suggestions? Thanks.
