weird speedometer short 200 1990

Hello,
I'm having a very strange problem with a couple of my 240s. This started with the odometer in my '86 240 not working. I took it apart and replace the little gear that breaks with an extra from the junk yard. I put it back in and it still doesn't work and the stepper motor gets hot (An electrical engineer friend of mine tells me that if you take the turbine out of the stepper motor it won't work anymore, I guess that's my mistake). I swap the panel on my 90' 240 to make sure it's the panel and not something else. The 90' panel worked in the '86. So I put the '90 panel back in the 90' and the '86 panel back in the '86. Immediated after I put the panel back in the 86' the engine starts trying to die while the speedometer is making random movements. I haven't fully investigated but it seems like probably a fuel problem. When I pull the electical connection to the odometer and the circular plug on the panel the engine problem quits. Meanwhile the '90 is doing fine until a day later when it developes the same symptoms. It seems like I've done something to make both of these panels short, but I can't think of what especially on the '90 where I just swapped the panel from one car to another. Very odd I think. If anybody has any ideas please let me know.
Thanks,
Colin Kenny
