sunroof way too stiff - maintenance, lubrication? 700

My 90 740 GL has the manual crank sunroof that flips up in back or cranks all the way back.
It pops up and down just fine but to crank back and forward is suddenly very difficult.
Are there points to lube or certain types of lubes that may help ease the mechanism?
