740 GLE idle problems after head swap 700

I swapped out the head on my 1990 740 GLE and now I have a very rough idle. Sometimes it is better than others. I believe the timing could use a little adjustment, but I have moved the distributer cap as far as it can go in both directions. My check engine light is on and I am also getting poor gas mileage. None of this started until I changed the head. I have checked and re-checked all of the connections, etc. What could it be? It is the B234f engine.
