Bent wheels 140-160

After having the wheels sandblasted, then painting them, I remounted the balance weights to the orignal positions, but the sandblaster obliterated my marks on the tires. I will use duct tape next time.

I rotated the tires front to back when I replaced them on the car, and got a serious vibration at above 60mph. I assumed I had put the weights on in the wrong places.

Stopped at tire store for balancing where the friendly manager pointed out to me that I had one tire separating, that there was pretty severe distortion in the tread. Quoted me $120 for a "rare" Michelin, plus balancing.

I went on to Pepboys where I got another "eurometric" 165R15 for 31.99 plus 3 balances on the others. Total $72

They pointed out to me that I had 2 bent wheels, which they placed on the rear, and said they would account for the vibration.

What's the trick for measuring, straightening bent steel wheels? Dial guage on a a stand while spinning by hand? Do they do it with the tire on? How much is too far out?

Oh and I couldn't go with orange paint on the wheels. Couldn't do it.
They are "mid-silver" centari metalic enamel.
