Blinking Upshift Arrow 1991 240 200 1991

Driving home last night in my 1991 240, I got a blinking upshift arrow followed by an engine stumble, then a check engine light, then the arrow quit blinking and the check engine remained on. I tried to read out the codes per the Bentley manual but I can't get the LED to blink at all. Since then the check engine has remained on and everything has worked OK. What's going on?
