'Ticking' from LF wheel 200 1982

Ever since I changed wheel bearings and brake pads, I've been getting an annoying "tick, tick" sound from the left front wheel. Happens whether brakes are applied or not. Last time I looked at it, I couldn't make the sound reoccur with the wheel off, spinning the hub by hand. Doesn't go away at high speed (rock in hubcap - not!)...

Any ideas?
