alternator question #2 900

recently I replaced my alternator out of my 93 940 with one from a junk yard from a 88 or 89 740. looks to have been a drop in replacement. but then I started to smell some thing that was like a rotten egg and chemicals together. the other night I was out side replacing the wipers with the car off and there was a loud band followed by another one about one minute later, the battery caps blew off the battery. could this be from the different alt or should I look in a different spot.
