should alternator run the engine w/battery disconnected?? 700 1987

I'm testing the alternator on a 1987 765 Turbo...

it's putting out 14 V, and the battery is receiving 13.8 V...

however when I disconnect the battery (while the car is running) the car dies...

shouldn't it continue to run after breaking the circuit?
