intermittent start 1800

Sometimes when I turn the ignition key on my '67 1800, nothing happens. I take a breath, push the clutch in again, turn the key and it cranks just fine. The battery is fully charged and the charging system (I've replaced the generator with an alternator kit) seems to work. The electrical connections that I can trace seem secure. I'm suspecting a solenoid, but why would it not work, then work fine? Do these cars have a cutoff switch that won't allow the ignition to work if the car is in gear and the clutch isn't depressed?
