How well does '88 240 air work? 200

I recently bought a 1988 240 with 73,000 miles, good shape. The air conditioning doesn't work though and I'm wondering if it's worth fixing, because I hear that it was a dealer add on that never worked too well. Is that true . . . any thoughts? I live in Toronto, Canada and we get some pretty hot, humid summers around here. Thanks, Fred
