Startup Backfires 78 B21F 200 1978

I have a 78 242GT, B21F that now and again while cranking the engine to start, will get a relatively powerful backfire. I remember reading something about "detonation" while just perusing through posts, but don't know if this is said problem. I'm wondering if anyone else has experience with this issue and has some pointers/tips/ideas? Once starting, even without the times of backfiring, it is very.. ragged. Unlike my 88 B23F.
