Intermittent Fuel Gauge/Temperature Gauge Operation

My 1989 740 GLE 16V with 201k miles sat idle for well over a year until I could get time to resolve some running issues. Finally got around to getting it going, and after replacing the fuel pump relay, pressure regulator, and RPM sensor the engine runs fine now.

There is one residual problem, probably related to the long period of inactivity, that I need some help with: the temperature gauge and gas gauge either work, or don't work, in unison. They work for a couple of days, and then don't. Both at the same time.

I suspect a faulty ground point that is common to both, but have never taken the dash out, and would like to have some idea of where to look before tearing things up too badly.

Can anyone suggest a starting point for resolving the intermittent gauge issue?

thanks,
