Can O2 sensor be faulty if there are no error codes? 200 1989

Howdy,

It's unclear to me whether a faulty O2 sensor will necessarily yield error codes. I believe an error code will appear if the sensor voltage is not fluctuating as it normally should...but what happens if the sensor completely dies and stops producing a voltage altogether?
