'88 744 Tail light Options 700

Does anyone know if the '90-'92 744 tail lights will fit on an '88 744? The plastic on the inside of the left tail light is cracked around one of the bulb holders and is letting water in. The right tail light also has a crack but on the outside lens. Since I'm going to replace both lenses, I'd like to upgrade to the newer 740 tail light design. Is it possible to simply switch out the lenses to the newer design? I also have a decor panel between the tail light lenses that I need to also take into consideration.
