Pesky oil leak- rear main or oil pan?? 200 1983

Have been trying to trace a persistant engine oil leak that appears after a short drive at the bottom of the bell housing between the M46 tranny and the clutch. Think it's either the rear main seal or the oil pan gasket.
I had to have the pan dropped to replace one of the O rings in the oil pump...Do I have to buy the 3 piece oil pan gasket to replace the OEM gasket? Can I drop the pan enough to put in a one piece gasket?
If it is the rear seal, should I get the new 7mm thick, brown seal or is the 10mm red OEM seal OK?
Thanks,
el Raidman
