I bought a 1992 244 on Long Island last year, and it has turned into quite a project. I have:
- Replaced rear brake rotors
- Replaced parking brake shoes
- Replaced one parking brake cable
- Replaced the airbag
- Replaced the coin tray
- Replaced the tranny (learned A LOT on that job)
- Fixed the horn (corroded contacts)
- Replaced the tranny crossmember
- Replaced the driveshaft center support cross member
- Rehabbed the driveshaft center support bearing (carefully pulled the seal; cleaned out the old grease using PB Blaster and compressed air; repacked the bearing; replaced the seal)
- Repaired 6 small rust holes in the floorpan (From what I could tell, they all started from damage spots in the undercoating. I cut out the rust, welded in patches, used POR-15 on everything in sight, and repaired the undercoating). I also got a great deal - ‘bout $35 for 75 sq. ft. - on some sort of mastic-like constrained layer damping treatment and added that to the floorpan and other flat panels)
As a little treat for all that effort, I also mounted a Sony 10 cd changer in the trunk. I got it for $60 on eBay, and connected it using the fm modulator that came with it. It sounds great! Overall, the car looks and runs great now.
One interesting thing about this car was that I found a massive number of coins when I took out the interior:
6 quarters from years 1967-2000
10 dimes (1974-2003)
4 nickels (1982-1991)
19 pennies (1947-2001)
2 Marine Henry Bay Cross Bay tokens of unknown value and vintage, but issued by the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority
So I found $2.89 in U.S. currency, including one coin, the ’47 penny, more than 50 years old! Folks, those bricks are worth more than you may think! And if there are any good folks who could use those two tokens (I was shocked by how much it cost to cross the Verrazano Narrows Bridge; isn’t that thing paid off YET!), email me a mailing address, and they’re yours. The tokens are copper, have an engraving of the VNB on one side, and are about the size of a Sacagawea dollar coin.
