About a week ago my wife informed me, that her brick has a "new" noise when changing from Park or Neutral into Drive or Reverse. It is not very loud, just a little knocking about every revolution of the engine. As we plan a long holiday in Greece with her car next week, we tried to find the reason for this noise. First i remembered the tank pump problem (Tank pump not running with loud injection pump). So i filled up the tank, but no change. Then i put it on a lift and tested the engine and the tranny (AW70L) with a stetoscope. I could hear the noise, but could not say whether its the tranny, the converter or the engine. So i went to a regular Volvo dealer, who also checked everything with the stetoscope. He told me its the converter, but no problems, it will last more than 4000 miles. Just change the tranny and the converter from a salvage yard when you are back home. He wished us nice holidays...
So we decided to do the job before our holidays (I already spent two weekends and a lot of money by not reacting immediately when my wife hears a special noise in her car, i had to change all the burnt door-motors...).
I made a course on identifying all the different tranny-versions and color-codes and bought a reasonable good tranny with about 60'000 miles.
We spent 3 evenings and one saturday to change the tranny, to put new sealings on the tranny and on the rear side of the engine. We saw, that the tranny really was in bad shape (brown colored dexron with a lot of small black particles and a lot of iron debris). So we were really happy when the job was done and enjoied the new tranny with very soft gear changes. But, and now comes the real question: The special noise is still the same. A small "clicking or knocking" noise about every revolution. What shall we do? Does somebody out there have experience with such a noise?
Thanks a lot for every contribution.
