Thanks much for the good advice. I put the new liquid line on this AM and vacuumed the system for 2+ hours. I charged it with three cans + a little more to make sure I did not overcharge. It is 70 degrees in the shade and when I took the car out for a little spin I was getting between 42 and 47 degree air out the center vent. Wish I could post a photo of the hole in the line I removed. I wouldn't have believed that it could hold vacuum if I had not seen it myself. The hole was under the front clamp that holds this line to the frame and I guess the rubber was sealing it until pressure went positive. It looks like corrosion damage --- Salt???, Battery acid??? Don't know the source, but it sure is dramatic.
Chris Herbst you are absolutely right about the value of experience and insight. If I had some prior experience, I would have recognized much earlier that there was a problem the first time I tried charging it. Also after replacing the leaking line and when I had installed about 36 Oz of R134a the low side pressure was up aroung 50 Psi. This made me nervous, but it started moving down quickly as more freon was installed. In the end with the outside temp at 70 F , the low side gauge was reading in the range of 33 to 35. Thanks also for your previous references to Nylog and ackits.com. I purchased a bottle of Nylog and the metric O-ring kit last week. I could not have done this job without these two items.
