Won't go into 'Park' intermittent problem 200 1992

My '92 245 with automatic transmission sometimes will not go fully into "Park".

It's out of gear, but the transmission is not locked--so the car tries to roll away.

I've noticed that the shift lever is not quite lined up with the "PRND21" markings the way it used to be, and it seems possible that the lever is out of adjustment and it's just not possible to push the lever far enough forward to be fully in "Park".

At least, I hope it's that simple.

Any thoughts on the cause of this problem, or how I could adjust the position of the shift lever to test my theory, would be greatly appreciated.
