Steering column removal 900 1994

My 940GL has a rattle felt when going over bumps etc, which feels like it is originating in the upper steering column area. I've read the FAQs and rebuilt the front suspension and checked out all the bits I haven't replaced, and I am fairly certain it is the upper bearing housing. (The mounting bolts are all tight so I figure it is a dodgy bearing rather than the whole housing being loose)

My car has a driver's airbag fitted. A 1991 car at a yard nearby has a column assembly available, but the car is the non-airbag model. Is the upper column bearing housing the same on airbag and non airbag models ?

Also, from reading my Haynes manual, to remove the column / upper bearing assembly, it is necessary to remove the lock assembly from the column. From memory, Haynes mention inserting the key into the lock, and turning it to position II. What does this step achieve ?

The car at the auto dismantler has the keys missing. Can the lock assembly be removed from that column (and replaced with my one) without access to the key for the donor column's lock ?

Any comments or words of wisdom appreciated.
