Michanic blowing smoke??? 200

I just got off the phone with a local independant volvo mechanic I am trying out and I wonder if he is blowing smoke... I took my '87 240 GL in this morning due to what I think is a fuel system problem... See post for more info...

Anyway - I just got a call from them, and the first thing he pointed to was a funky battery ground cable - the previous owners (I have owned the car for 3 months) replaced both battery cables w/ "autozone" generics... anyway, he said that the volvo grounding wire is a 2 wire split, going to the Block and the Body (okay!) but the generic was only ground to the body... Said the first step was to replace the battery cable ($50)... He asked how long I have been driving it that way (one ground) and I said as long as I have owned it... He said "Well, I hope you haven't damaged the ECU"

Could this be??? ECU is about the most expensive part out there, aside from biggies like a transmission!

I asked him to jump the ground to the block, simulating the correct battery cable and continue to test the fuel problem and I will follow up later today.

Thoughts anyone?

I'll post updates as they develop.
