Fuel Prices, Miles per Gallon, and other comments 200 1988

Greetings all. Its been a while since I've gotten a look at the board. (Good to be back!:)

I was just curious how we are all making out with the price of gasoline these days, and what if any changes we are making in our driving habits. I presume others, like me, are trying to squeeze every mile out of each gallon of that liquid gold we're feeding our bricks.

The biggest conservation tip I've found, aside from proper tuning, is to stay consious of how hard I'm pushing down w/ my right foot!!! When I installed my tach last year, I didn't realize how closely I'd be watching it in conjunction w/ my spedometer like I am now. By slowing down my speed overall, I'd say I gained about 4 mpg. By watching how my slushbox auto transmission behaves at highway speeds, I learned that I had been wasting fuel on up and down hills without much gain in speed. Uphill, I used to try to keep on hauling along at my normal speed, but now I let my speed fall off a bit. The loss of speed hardly affects the overall trip time. (Maybe someone can calculate the difference in time between pulling a 3/4 mile hill at 65 vs 75 mph.) I figure, hey if I'm at least doing the speed limit, let those gas guzzling SUVs go around me, heck I'll even move to the slow lane for them!!!!!

My car is a 1988 240 sedan, automatic transmission (AW70, i think, correct me if I'm wrong), with 253k miles, runs on 87 octane from where ever is the cheapest. She gets faithfull oil changes at every 3500 miles with Valvoline high mileage oil (red bottle stuff), and a bottle of Chevron Techtron about every two out of three oil changes.

Hope to hear others tips and tricks. Thanks in advance for sharing.
Doug
