1990 740 alternator alternative?

Hi my 1990 740 (B230F, 8-valve, non turbo) alternator is on its way out and was wondering what kind of alternators I can use on the car. Can I use a 240 alternator? or a 740 alternator from a previous generation?

I just pulled the alternator and had it checked....and it looks like I'm going to need a new one. :-/ Oh well.
