The timing belt on my wife's 86 240DL broke about 14 miles away from town. (It lasted 186,000) I went with a chain and towed her home; forgetting in the heat of the situation that you don't tow an automatic transmission. Anyway, the local mechanic has replaced the timing belt, the engine runs well, the transmission (after a test drive of about 10 miles) seems to have no problems. I am to vain to mention to the mechanic that I towed it for 14 miles this way. But what do you experts think? Have I done much damage to the transmission? Thanks for your responses.
