5 speed standard transmission/ electric shift wonky 700 1987

I just purchased my first Volvo, a 1987 740GLE with a manual transmission. I push the little button on top of the shift lever and the "5" lights up on the panel. But according to the tach, it hasn't shifted... Until I've driven for 15-20 minutes. Then it seems to have "warmed up" and functions normally. It's really a great car to be smitten with. But this bit wrankles. Has anyone here had this problem? If so, whad'ya do to fix it?
