Hi
I was wondering if you could help me? I am thinkning about buying a Volvo 740 Turbo, and would like some advice.
The car is a 1987 model with 229,000 miles. It is straight and doesn't burn oil though the engine compartment is full of crud and oil, possibly from the oil filler cap.
What I am worried about is the turbo itself as the mileage is so high. What can I look for to indicate any areas of concern. When I drove it the turbo guage stayed on the left side and never went into the 'orange'. There doesn't appear to be any knocking but the top end seems a little 'tappety'.
The car has had several oil changes (owner can't prove this) but all work was done by a reputable local garage (not dealer) and has had a new clutch and brake discs/pads and tires. It drives well and the overdrive works.
It is offered at silly money based on the mileage BUT I am still scared of the turbo, all my Volvo's have been pretty basic.
Would love to hear of your experiences.
Matt
