stall on startup issue, Rex / Regina B230F 900 1993

The wife's 940 is one of those cars - you know, Regina-equipped. It has been absolutely trouble free since we bought it 5 yrs ago, so I have been content not to mess with it. However, it is now showing signs of a problem.

Start up the car in the morning, after at least 12hrs. of non-use, and it will crank, fire immediately, and then stall (sometimes it will stumble through it.) Cranking again, it fires right up and runs like a champ. This pattern arose out of the blue early last week, and has happened every morning since. Restarting at any point after this, even as long as ~9hrs. later, it fires up instantly w/out problems. I ran a bottle of dry gas through it, thinking maybe water in the tank, condensed in the cool morning air... but it had no effect. I shudder to think it may be the check valve in front of the fuel pump, which, if I understand correctly, is in the tank with the FP on this car.

Any ideas on this issue? A possibly related issue that has happened recently as well - on two occasions, stomping on the gas from a stoplight has resulted in a low-power situation. IOW, it accelerates like a slug until ~3K RPM and then runs normally.

The idle control valve has given me no reason to suspect it, the FPR isn't shooting gas, but I have some old vac lines that I'm going to replace as a matter of course. Another Q, do the Regina cars use the same fuel filter as the Bosch ones? This item has not been replaced yet under my ownership.

TIA...
