Air Con upgrading 700

My 89 740 with 300,000 is in my garage for some TLC since I would like to get another 200,000 out of it before one of us drops over.
The R-12 Air conditioning could probably be recharged but I'm wondering if there is a concise description of what is needed to upgrade to R-134.

I've heard several options for this change but would like to get a professional aspect, especially since I want this car to last another 8-10 years.

Can anyone help me out?
