OD Solinoid 200 1979

I've heard conflicting answers about how to check the OD Solinoid for my M46.
do I put 12 volts to both of the terminals on the Solinoid or just one and ground the other? if I ground one of the terminals which 0ne? I'll have the Solinoid out later this afternoon, I've heard that you can clean it out is that true? mine is sticking on and not disengaging.
