fuel filter direction 200 1988

recently replaced the fuel filter on my 88 245. thought everything went well, but was reading the 700/900 FAQ, which says fuel flow direction is toward the rear. that seems counterintuitive; i installed the filter with the arrows pointing toward the engine. was i wrong? if so, what are the consequences? (the car runs fine, save for noise from the fuel pump, which began immediately after the filter replacement.)
