Removing Dried Adhesive from Packaging Tape 200 1988

While daughter was away at college, tailight assembly fell out and was hanging by wires. She temporarily taped it in place, but never bothered to get the tape adhesive off after having the new tailight installed.
Now, 3 months later, it is hardened. The paint on this car is great. How can I get the mess off without screwing it up? Oh, and by the way, it's on the bumper, too.
