Ignition Problem Diagnosis 700 1989

I need help diagnosing a problem with my ignition. If the problem were constant, it wouldn't be that big a deal, but it only happens maybe once a month at most. Sometimes when my car has been sitting for a while (at least an hour) I crank it and it fires up and then immediately dies. When that happens, it won't start up again for about a half hour. If I just let it sit for that half hour, it usually starts up just fine. Yesterday, it decided to strand me so I let it sit all day, and when I started it up last night it ran, but the engine light came on. Today it acts like nothing ever happened. Starts right up and no engine light. I'm going to check the sparkplugs tonight to see if they're faulty and I'll move on to the trickier stuff after that. Anyone have any idea what could be causing it so I don't just take apart my whole engine?
