4th gear transmission shift 900 1992

I had a really hard time getting the 4th gear disengagement button to work. The light on the dash stayed on and I kept pressing the little button on the left side of shifter to go back to normal driving. After many attempts it finally worked. Does this mean switch is on the way out? If so is this easy to fix?
