Rusted out plate/splashguard next to brake rotor - needed? 200 1990

I'm doing the front brakes on my newly acquired 245. The plate/splashguard (I on't know the name for this) inboard of the brakes is gone, looks like it was rusted (I'm in NE Ohio) and just came off or was torn off. Is it necessary to replace this? It seems like water & junk will still get in there, but this will help some. If I need it, is it just a dealer item? (which means I'll just order it from some southwest junkyard). BTW, anyone ever have the brake hose nipple shear in half, leaving just the threads in the caliper? THAT was interesting.
