Synthetic motor oil conversion on high mileage 240 200

Anyone have advice on whether I should convert to synthetic motor oil in my '88 245DL? If so, what steps should I take to convert? Mileage is currently at 143k and I am now averaging around 30k/year. Car was bought new and maintained by myself with regular oil and filter changes.
