All of you have been extremely helpful in helping me diagnose the problems with my Volvo. I bought it about a year ago at 215K, and it's up to 220K. It's my daily commuter, but thankfully I don't have far to travel. With your help I've saved a lot of money in maintenance costs. Now I've got another question.
Lately I've noticed that the valve train is making a lot more noise. It used to be a noticeable "ticking" noise, but now it's a loud "tapping" noise, especially at higher RPMs. I know OHC engines make a good deal of valve noise, but this seems out of the ordinary to me.
A local shop will rebuild the cylinder head for around $300. I am comfortable putting an assembled cylinder head into the vehicle, but I have no experience actually working on the cylinder head components.
Anyone have any suggestions? Is it worth fixing the head on a 220K mile engine, or should I look into a total engine overhaul?
