'89 240 Wagon - liftgate wiring 200

After getting stopped a couple of nights ago for no tag light, I discovered that the wiring for those lights, and the rear window wiper, runs through the hinges of the liftgate. A small section of wiring is exposed in each hinge and age along with constant opening and closing has worn them out. All of the wires appear to be broken. The wiper hasn't worked for some time but the tag light was working until a couple of weeks ago.
Haven't had much time to mess with it so I guess the question is how much of a hassle is it to get at all of this? Should I dismantle the hinges/remove the door and try to splice things, or try to rewire?
Read through a thread from April '03 and got some insight. Just curious if anyone has dealt any differently with this since.
