odometer not working... BUT typical gear appears fine 200

the odometer in my 1983 245GL is not working. The speedometer functions fine. I took the speedometer out of the gauge cluster, and inspected it. The gear that is the typical failure appears fine (no breaks, or missing teeth)

Do you have any suggestions? What could be the cause of this problem? Is the odometer run by the same (mechanical) input as the speedometer? (I have heard there is an odometer "motor" but that may be on later (electronically driven) speedometers...)
