1983 B21FTi

My 75C (~180F) stat never opens. I can see through the line connection this device is operated by a wax plunger suspiciously reminiscent of the airbox t-stat, so I figure the Wahler/Volvo unit probably died around 1985! Warmed it in the oven-- the plunger wouldn't budge even after cranking up the heat to droplet sizzling temperature.

After removing the circlip I can't seem to coax the t-stat/spring/valve mechanism out of the adapter body. Feels like an ancient hardened o-ring behind it.

Suggestions anyone?
