How do you disconnect the speedometer? 200 1982

My daughter and I are changing out the dash in our 1982 242. Have everything disconnected except for the instrument cluster. Can't pull it forward enough to get a good look at how to disconnect the (mechanical) speedo cable. Looks as if there is some type of plastic retaining band around the plastic "nut" you would unscrew(?) to free the cable. Need your help so I don't break it!!!
