fuel gauge doesn't work. 200

so. my fuel gauge doesn't work.
i'm driving from ma to az and that will suck with no fuel gauge.
i powered the fuel gauge in the dash and the needle went up so i'm assuming thats fine.
no fuses are blown so i'm assuming thats fine.
my ground seems to be in tact so thats assumed fine.
i don't know where the fuel level sender or whatever it's called is so i don't know if thats fine.
i don't know where the wiring is so i don't know if thats fine.

if anyone has any insight on how to make my fuel gauge work that would make my day very fine.
