I cannot get this car to start 700 1986

Okay. I'm about at my wits end here.

Two weeks ago, the catalytic converter in my 86 Volvo 740 became restricted. At the time I did not know about towing the car from the rear, but the actual tow was only about 25 miles. Prior to getting the converter changed, I had the front and rear tranny seals checked and there were no leaks or puckering.
Okay. So I get buy a OEM cat, direct bolt, take it to a local service station to just have the cat replaced. It was. The technician stated he had test-driven the car and it drove fine. I should say that prior to the catalytic converter issue, the car drove strong. Engine strong. Transmission strong. Suspension nice and tight. Okay, back to the scenario.

In the last two monthss:

Replaced engine wiring harness (thanks Dave!)
Fuel pressure regulator
Bosch plugs
Catalytic converter
Fuel pump and filter

Now, driving the car away from the service station where I had the cat/converter replaced I noticed that the car didn't quite have the boost I was accustomed to. It was late in the evening, the technician was really tired, and I told him I'd drive it home and bring it to him in the morning. The next morning, the car simply would not start at all. So I had it towed (the correct way this time) to a neighborhood station where my favorite technician is (not a Volvo tech though) works. He found the fuel pump pressure low (26) and I bought a fuel pump and the pressure is at 43 now. He's checked the engine wiring, fuel injectors, timing and belt. Still, it won't start. I'm going to a pick and pull tomorrow and find a computer and swap the present one with it to see if there is somehow a short there, but after that if it doesn't start I have no idea what else it could be. And the technician is becoming frustrated as well, because he's run out of ideas. So, short of hitching it up (the correct way, of course) and towing it to the Volvo dealer in Virginia, anybody got any ideas of things I may have missed that, under the circumstances, might keep the car from starting. I should mention that it cranks fine. Previous to the troubles, I'd turn the key, whether cold or hot, and it would start on the first crank after about a second. Now, the ONLY way you can get the engine to start is crank it four-five times and be holding the gas pedal all the way to the floor. Then it sounds like it's gasping for air, wobbles, shakes like it's trying to get out of the car and of course shuts off the second you release the gas pedal.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, or it's off to the dealer (something that, after the money I've already spent diagnosing this baby, I'm not looking forward to).
