need more knowledge on six cyclinders engine 900

I would like to know more about the the volvo 6 cyclinders engine. Why it is called interference engine? Why would a broken timing belt be catastophic on the six cyclinders while the 4 cylinder just need a new one and the car can go back to service? Thanks for any valuable answers.
