coolant leak into engine dangerous? 700 1985

1985 740 GLE losing lots of coolant (expansion tank and 1/2)every 25 miles on highway. I suspect head gasket leak . What are the dangers of letting this go unchecked and just keeping up with replacing water after every trip.
Any thing serious?
