expansion tank puking antifreeze... temp. guage fine... bad cap? 700 1988

Gang,

yesterday for no particular reason, I noticed a puddle of antifreeze under my car (I had run inside quickly after a drive). Basically, I heard a hissing coming from the expansion tank cap with a small trickle of antifreeze coming out of it. Same thing happened today. Each time the temperature guage read normal operating temp... nothing pegged at all.

I did a mini pressure test by cutting a bicycle tube in half and fitting it over the expansion tank with a hose clamp and pressurised it up to about 40psi with no signs of any leaking.

Can the expansion tank caps go bad with time?

new water pump, thermostat, antifreeze (50/50).

any advice?
